The Red Coral: Corallium rubrum

Corallium rubrum, better known simply as Red Coral, is found mainly in the Mediterranean. Exactly in our city of origin "Alghero" we find the most beautiful and well known Red Coral.

Alghero is a small Italian city located in northern Sardinia, a beautiful island in the Mediterranean area.

As we said, here we find one of the best qualities of Red Coral in terms of compactness and color uniformity.

Corallium rubrum needs special conditions of life: constant salinity and reduced water movement with a dim light. Therefore, we find it mostly in caves, overhangs or fissures in the rocks.

And right in the caves of "Porto Conte", "Capo Caccia" and "Punta Giglio" in the northwest of Sardinia, in the territory of "Alghero" is where it is found in large quantities.

It should be emphasized that the city of "Alghero" has a deep respect for the Corallium rubrum that has been and continues to be a fundamental resource in the economy and tradition of the territory, and that is why the marine protected area "AMP" was created. di Capo Caccia-Isola Piana ". Within the area there is a cave called "Grotta Del Corallo" completely covered with Corals and from where the attempt of a project was born to help the Corals reproduce and grow.

Special supports are being created, to which Coral fragments have been grafted from the cutting debris supplied by professional submarines operating in the area. These supports are inserted in the seabed so that other Corals can create colonies and thus preserve the conservation of the species.

Alghero, which became the capital of coral fishing at the beginning of the 20th century, currently has very strict laws regarding coral fishing.

In the city, authorized persons are less than ten and must respect the indicated periods, as well as the numerous safety measures related to the equipment used and the dimensions of the pieces taken.

And it is with this love for our land and our traditions that each of our jewels is born.
